Frankie Weiss and Her Magic

Chapter Ten: Why Adopt a Cat?

Frankie Weiss and Her Magic
Chapter Ten

Why Adopt a Cat?

This morning while combing what is left of my white hair, Frankie strolls into the bathroom sits down on the carpeted toilet seat, turns around, her head facing the water tank, lets out a special cat sound while raising her rump, a signal that her Mr. Mom understands very well. She wants her body brushed. Often, what Frankie wants, Frankie gets. Call it love; call it whatever you may wish, I call it her need to be reassured she’s important in my life. (She should know by now, after six years of living together and all the money she cost me!) She’s toothless and the prettiest and perhaps the rarest Calico cat in the entire world. Stories and pictures of Frankie and her companion cat, Johnnie and their escapades have traveled the globe, thanks to many feline web sites and cat lovers worldwide.

December 4, 1997 the remaining years of my life changed forever as I let these two five-month old cats, Frankie and Johnnie Weiss out of the pet carrier as they entered the living room of their future home for the first time. Their entrance into the Weiss scheme of things was the harbinger of peace and contentment for this eighty-two year old man at that period in his life; having spent six lonely months living alone after the unforgettable passing of his wife Evelyn , sharing 39 years of a fulfilling marriage. No need to explain, it was put into an earlier chapter of this story.

We all know and have seen many times over the love a dog will foster for its owner. Some non-cat keepers cannot or will not understand the bond, the attraction, and yes, even the sharing of love between feline and human.

If you go back to the beginning of this story, the last line of these five says it all. It is worth repeating:

I’m sitting at the computer, putting words to this story, Frankie walks into the room…. She looks at me, jumps onto my lap, turns around, making herself comfortable resting her paws on my left arm and begins kneading.

Suddenly, the world is mine!
